To mark National Senior Citizens Day this past Sunday, August 21, Mayor John Stokes and Councilmember Lynne Robinson honored the remarkable residents of Bellevue’s The Bellettini, an independent and assisted living community located right here in DTB.
The elected officials presented a proclamation and recognized the leadership and community spirit of Bellevue’s most long-lived citizens.
The Bellettini’s residents range in age from 62 to 97 and continue to inspire and make valued contributions to the community. Three exceptional examples are Rocky Ursino, Mike Flynn and Joan Snelson.
Ursino, 86, a retired optician and himself an amputee, has been visiting with elderly amputees at the VA Puget Sound hospital in Seattle for over three years.
Flynn, 76, was the publisher of the Puget Sound Business Journal for 24 years and hasn’t slowed down much since he retired. Last year, he took second place in the 100-meter dash at the World Senior Games in Huntsman, Utah.
Snelson, 85, is an active volunteer for Congregations for the Homeless where she makes a positive impact, helping homeless Eastside men make the transition from life on the street to stable, independent living.
These are but a few examples of The Bellettini’s residents who continue to lead important, active lives. Through partnerships with cultural centers, schools and senior advocacy groups, The Bellettini makes it easy for residents to contribute to and be part of the greater community.
“We have a philosophy of inspired aging which means our residents are every bit as engaged socially, physically and mentally today as they have been throughout their lives,” said The Bellettini’s General Manager Kate Harrison. “We so appreciate that Mayor Stokes and Councilmember Robinson are shining the spotlight on the accomplishments of this generation.”
National Senior Citizens Day was established in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan as a day to support, honor and show appreciation to the country’s seniors and recognize their many contributions to the community.
