Details

Visit BAM for an all-ages arts workshop with Japanese calligrapher Hiroe Nishikawa. Nishikawa will provide a demonstration of Japanese brushwork and ink grinding, before guiding participants in the creation of their own kanji character paintings, using traditional sumi ink and washi paper. Children 7 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to participate. Instruction will be provided in both Japanese and English languages.
This workshop has been developed alongside the Washi Transformed: New Expressions in Japanese Paper exhibition, featuring 9 contemporary artists who have pushed washi beyond its traditional uses to create highly textured two-dimensional works, expressive sculptures, and dramatic installations.
