Did you know there was a lumber mill once in the Bellevue neighborhood of Wilburton? The Hewitt-Lea Lumber Mill Company operated from 1905-1919, and was near the Wilburton Trestle which was built by the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1904 as part of the eleven mile Hewitt-Lea lumber spur. More than 100 years ago the Eastside of Lake Washington was a thick forest of timber that attracted workers from all over the nation. By 1920, most of the land has been clear cut.
Join Eastside Heritage Center, Newcastle Historical Society, and Issaquah Alps Trails Club for a public presentation on the Eastside’s logging history. This presentation will cover logging progression from 12-foot hand saws to 2,000 foot skyline cables that cleared whole valleys at Cougar Mountain. Attendees will have the opportunity to see archival photos, tools and equipment used by loggers between 1860-1960.
