State of the Eastside Luncheon and the American Dream
Pursuit of the “American Dream” has framed stories of success in our nation for generations. And the trappings of that dream have been used indications of ascending the socio-economic ladder for at least as long. According to many versions of the dream, the pathway to an enviable life starts with getting the right education in order to land a well-paying job, to buy a nice house, in a good neighborhood for one’s all-American spouse and kids.
While the American Dream is alive and well on the Eastside, there are certainly ways in which it feels more and more out of reach for more and more people. We have some of the greatest educational institutions in the world yet still struggle with a persistent opportunity gap. The jobs available here attract global talent for high pay at the same time that many people have to commute so far to find an affordable place to live that traffic in this region is among the nation’s worst. We take pride in the diversity and welcoming nature of our neighborhoods while reading all-too-frequently about ways foreign-born and American-made members of our communities face alienation rather than hospitality.
Join us as business, non-profit, and public sector members of our community come together to discuss the state of the American Dream on the Eastside today. A panel of community perspectives will react to your input and results of a community survey.
Tickets are $85 for an individual or $1,500 for a corporate table. Seating is limited, so please sign up today.
