BDA Activates Downtown Bellevue for World Cup

May 26, 2026 - by Brittnie Eakle

People from around the world are coming to the Pacific Northwest for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and Downtown Bellevue is preparing to celebrate in a big way.

Throughout the tournament timeframe, the Bellevue Downtown Association (BDA) will bring a series of community-focused activations, events, and public space experiences to Downtown Bellevue, transforming key gathering spaces along the Grand Connection Corridor into hubs of activity and connection.

Centered around the Bellevue Downtown Station area, public plazas along the Grand Connection, and the South Bellevue Station area, the activations are designed to create welcoming, visible, and accessible experiences for residents, workers, visitors, and transit riders alike.

Community Watch Party

June 19, 2026

Gather at The Meadow on June 19 for a community watch party featuring the USA vs. Australia match on a giant outdoor screen. Happening on Juneteenth, the event offers the perfect opportunity for residents, workers, and visitors to come together and experience the excitement of the World Cup in Downtown Bellevue. The event begins at 11 a.m. ahead of the noon kickoff and invites fans to enjoy the match together in one of Downtown’s newest public spaces.

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, cushions, or other portable seating. Space is limited and seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Pop-Up on the Plaza: Soccer Edition

The BDA’s Pop-Up on the Plaza series will also receive a soccer-inspired twist. Traditionally designed to activate public spaces while highlighting businesses and organizations, these special editions will feature smaller daytime soccer-themed activations throughout Downtown Bellevue.

Visitors can expect opportunities to engage with the community, discover local businesses, and enjoy interactive experiences designed to build excitement leading up to the Seattle matches.

Interactive Activations Along the Grand Connection

As part of the activation strategy, the BDA will introduce a variety of temporary installations and placemaking elements throughout Downtown Bellevue, including:

  • Photo MarqueesCustomized temporary installations designed as memorable photo opportunities celebrating the tournament in Downtown Bellevue and the South Bellevue Station area. Created by local artist Sarah Robbins, a Seattle-based illustrator, painter, and designer known for colorful, community-centered work inspired by vintage imagery, typography, and storytelling.
  • Wayfinding Kiosks: Informational kiosks located throughout high-traffic areas along the Grand Connection Corridor to help visitors discover watch locations, soccer-related events, activations, and downtown destinations.
  • Pop-Up Foosball Tables: Free to play foosball tables placed throughout public spaces to encourage playful engagement and community gathering.
  • Flag and Banner Décor: Soccer-inspired decorative installations including flags representing all 48 participating countries will line portions of the corridor in recognition of the global event bringing color, movement, and international flair to Downtown.

Activating Downtown Bellevue Through Shared Experiences

These activations reflect the BDA’s ongoing commitment to creating engaging public experiences and strengthening connections throughout Downtown Bellevue. By activating plazas, gathering spaces, and pedestrian corridors, the organization hopes to encourage exploration, support local businesses, and foster a sense of community during this internationally significant moment.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup represents a historic opportunity for Downtown Bellevue and the greater region. As visitors from around the world arrive in the Pacific Northwest, Bellevue has the chance to showcase its walkability, vibrant public spaces, hospitality, and growing urban energy on a global stage.

We hope you’ll celebrate with us! Attend an activation, explore Downtown Bellevue, support your neighbors, and share your experience along the way. If your business or organization is planning a World Cup-themed activation or event, we’d love to hear about it.
