The Kisii Traditional Dance Cultural Celebration Series brings authentic East African
cultural performances to Bellevue's City Hall Plaza through three monthly celebrations
from June through August 2026. This small-scale activity series features traditional
dance from the Abagusii people (commonly known as Kisii) of Kenya, delivered by
experienced cultural practitioners from East Africa.

Each celebration includes demonstration performances showcasing traditional Kisii dance
forms including Entaburuta (characterized by vigorous jumping with dynamic torso
movements), Ribina, and Okwariera. These dances are embedded in Kisii lifecycle events—
birth, initiation, marriage, and community celebrations—making them powerful vehicles
for cultural preservation and intergenerational connection.

The program creates an inclusive, welcoming atmosphere at City Hall Plaza where residents,
workers, and visitors can experience authentic African culture through:
• Live demonstration performances by five Kisii dancers
• Interactive teach-and-dance-along sessions where attendees learn traditional steps
• Cultural education about the significance of each dance in Kisii community life
• Opportunities for cross-cultural exchange and community building

All events are free and open to the public, creating accessible cultural experiences
that activate City Hall Plaza, draw diverse audiences to downtown Bellevue, and create
memorable experiences that encourage repeat visits. By bringing authentic East African
traditions to Bellevue's public spaces, this series celebrates cultural diversity while
fostering community connection through shared cultural experiences.
