Elevated Perspectives: Exploring Urban Innovation in the Mile High City
October 22, 2025 - by Serena Sherwood
In early October, the Bellevue Downtown Association’s Study Tour delegation traveled to the Mile High City, seeking insights about the elevated experiences Denver has been implementing to their downtown. The Study Tour is an annual, curated trip designed by the BDA to provide local leaders with inspiration from another urban destination.
The itinerary blends programming, walking tours, and social events—offering a unique opportunity to learn, connect, and strengthen relationships through shared experiences. The delegation is composed of local leaders and community champions who share a commitment to Downtown Bellevue and thoughtful urban planning.
Over the course of three days, we immersed ourselves in the stories behind some of Denver’s most transformative projects, showcasing innovation, placemaking, and development.
Day 1: Union Station and LoHi

Our journey started on the A-Line, which runs between Denver International Airport and Union Station in downtown Denver.
After a smooth ride downtown, we learned about the redevelopment story of Union Station — including insights into managing and activating the station as a vibrant public space.
The afternoon took us across pedestrian bridges and through Riverfront Park, highlighting how infrastructure can connect neighborhoods and foster walkability.
We ended the day with a reception at Room for Milly in LoHi, with a portion of our group heading off to Meow Wolf later in the evening for a glimpse into the creative forces behind one of Denver’s most unique cultural experiences.
Day 2: Downtown Denver
Thursday focused on the heart of the city. The Downtown Denver Partnership introduced us to their vision for a more inclusive, activated urban core. A walking tour through LoDo showcased key sites like McGregor Square, Dairy Block, and Larimer Square, and the challenges and success of activating each.
The afternoon centered on the ambitious 16th Street Project, aimed at reimagining one of Denver’s most valuable public spaces. Our tour revealed how investments and interventions can reshape public spaces to foster connections and community.
That night featured one of the delegation’s most enjoyable traditions: the group dinner. Held at Rioja, a James Beard Award–winning restaurant located in the heart of Larimer Square, everyone enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with friends and discuss their time in Denver so far.
Day 3: Cherry Creek
Our final day took us to Cherry Creek, where delegates heard from the Cherry Creek North Business Improvement District.
A walking tour highlighted the area’s unique blend of retail and public space, followed by a chunk of free time where delegates were encouraged to explore. As we departed for the airport, we carried with us a deeper understanding of how the Mile High City evolved, and how city design can shape vibrant communities.
