Mayor Lynne Robinson has terminated an emergency order for overnight curfews for downtown Bellevue through Saturday morning. The city will return to daily risk assessments to determine the need to institute further measures for public safety. No curfew is planned for the night of Thursday, June 4. 

The City of Bellevue, Bellevue Downtown Association, and Bellevue Chamber are working collaboratively to bring current information to our community and businesses to help preserve public safety and reduce incidents of property damage.

The City of Bellevue announced this evening that Mayor Lynne Robinson has again reissued curfew orders for the Downtown Bellevue area, following a continued risk of public disturbances and property damage. The curfew will be in effect tonight from 5:00pm June 2 to 5:00am June 3.

City of Bellevue Mayor Lynne Robinson declared a civil emergency and established a curfew for the as a result of looting and property damage in the Downtown core. The curfew will be in effect from 5:30pm May 31 to 5:30am June 1.

Both events will not take place this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Governor Inslee’s “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order extension.

The City of Bellevue has taken a leadership role on resolving curbside challenges. In 2019, Bellevue was selected along Boston and Minneapolis to participate in the 2020 Smart Cities Collaborative to launch a pilot project to study curbside demand and find solutions to reduce stress. With “solving our region's biggest challenges” in the title, October’s BDA Breakfast carried quite a bit of heft. But that’s also what made the morning so compelling: we heard from an all-star panel of Washington leaders on how we can begin to do just that – all through collaboration and proactive policy.

The 2019 Study Tour trip to Dallas was a marathon of activities and lessons learned. For three days in early October, a group of 60 stakeholders explored Dallas’s urban environment and met with local leaders. Thematic takeaways included Dallas’s development success through public-privates partnerships and how investing in programmable space can yield tremendous economic activity. Thank you to all who attended last Tuesday's Bellevue City Council Candidates Forum at the September BDA Breakfast. Attendees heard from eight candidates running for four seats on the Bellevue City Council. Kim Malcolm, host of KUOW’s All Things Considered, moderated the hour-long forum, giving each candidate equal time for opening and closing remarks, as well as the opportunity to address five different questions.

The NE corner of Downtown Bellevue’s largest public park is getting a facelift! The City of Bellevue has submitted permits for construction of new park improvements to create a pedestrian gateway at the NE corner of the Bellevue Downtown Park at NE 4th and Bellevue Way. This will make Bellevue Downtown Park more accessible to retail customers, visitors and Downtown employees, creating even more connectivity through our dynamic Downtown.

Bellwether has landed once again in Downtown Bellevue, transforming the places we often look past into thought-provoking artwork and installations. 

The Bellevue Downtown Association (BDA) officially opposes the Washington Initiative 976 ballot measure. The BDA joins a growing coalition of employers, business and trade organizations opposing the initiative, noting transportation projects are badly needed to relieve congestion, improve transit reliability, and support access for Bellevue employees, residents and visitors.

Downtown's Blazing Bagels is moving to a new location at the end of this month. It may be a detour for commuters traveling into the transit center, but its worth the walk. Learn more about the new location and when the shift will occur.

Sound Transit is celebrating an incredible milestone! Contractors are halfway done with construction of the East Link light rail extension. The East Link extension will become the “Blue Line” when we open for service in 2023. People will notice that some stations and trackways look complete and ready to service, but all 14-miles and 10 stations of the “Blue Line” will open all at once in 2023, after testing and pre-revenue service.

The BDA Board of Directors approved the Transportation Committee’s recommended Downtown Access Strategy update. Over the course of four meetings, BDA Members worked toward creating an effective advocacy framework for addressing policy issues by acknowledging competing views and finding shared goals. The update marks the first revision to the strategy since it was adopted in 2011.

Microsoft announced recently that it is committing $500 million to advance affordable housing solutions. Microsoft’s message included a call to action, encouraging individuals, business, and the state legislature to contribute to the cause. The Mayors of Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Issaquah, Renton, Sammamish, Auburn, Kent and Federal Way are pledging to take vital and concrete steps to address the issue. The Bellevue Downtown Association is tracking the housing issue and advocating policy changes to encourage development of more affordable units.

Chronic absenteeism affects schools across the nation. Here, on the Eastside, more than 4,300 students in the Bellevue and Lake Washington school districts were “chronically absent,” in 2017. The Bellevue Downtown Association made the first step in its advocacy work on the Wilburton land use code update. Initiated by the BDA Land Use and Livability Committee, members convened to review Wilburton Draft Environmental Impact Statement and submitted a letter representing member feedback. The City of Bellevue conducts a biennial survey of local businesses to get a grasp of the current economic situation of businesses in Bellevue. We took a look at some of the key highlights from the 2017. Overall, the majority of businesses in Bellevue (69%) feel that the City is headed in the right direction.

The Transportation Commission on January 11 approved a recommendation to City Council supporting a demonstration bikeway along 108th Ave NE.  Due to time constraints, the Commission postponed its hearing on free-floating bike share to January 25, when they are expected to vote a recommendation to Council.

The Bellevue City Council’s unanimous adoption of the revised Downtown Land Use Code marked a major milestone for the Downtown Livability Initiative.
